Viscotek is setting a new standard in GPC technology with the introduction of a series of highly specialized columns. The highly inert I-Series and G-Series columns as well as the innovative C-Series and A-Series columns will offer much needed flexibility in our increasingly complex separation challenges. We also offer a highly rugged H-Series columns for High Temperature (HT) GPC
applications.
GPC columns can be classified in several ways:
Solvent Classification and Polymer Type
● Organic Solvent and Polymer
■ HHR-Series Columns for non-polar polymers
■ I-Series Column for intermediate polar polymers
■ G-Series Column for highly polar polymers
● Aqueous Solvent and Polymer
■ PWXL-Series Columns for neutral polymers
■ C-Series for cationic polymers
■ A-Series for anionic polymers
Temperature Range
● Temperature up to 100°C
■ Many columns will work well at temperatures up to about 100°C
● Higher Temperatures in 140-160°C range
■ Special columns are required for this range in temperature
■ H-Series Columns which are high temperature columns would be appropriate for these
temperatures that are used for polyolefin analysis
Pore Size
● Traditional Pore Size
■ Packings were available only in narrow distributions of pore sizes which would require large
sets of columns to affect a separation of a broad molecular weight distribution polymer
● Mix Bed Columns Pore Size
■ Mixed bed columns are a broad pore size distribution
■ These generally give adequate separations for a greater variety of polymer samples with fewer
number columns in the set.
Particle Size
● Smaller Particles
■ Smaller particles yield higher resolution but there are limitations such as increased
backpressure, higher shear rate, and sample capacity
Physical Length and Diameter of Column
The Sum of all these choices often results in a challenging array of column combinations.
The proper selection of a column set is a blend of science and art. It requires knowledge of the polymers to be analyzed, both their chemistry and their expected range of molecular weights. In addition, one should be familiar with various solvents and their interaction with the polymer sample and with the column packings. Then comes the daunting task of sorting through the many column types in order to find the optimum set for your particular application.
Fortunately, Viscotek is a specialized supplier of GPC products – large macromolecule analysis is one of our key areas of business -- and is able to simplify column selection and offer assurance that the column set you purchase from us will work for the specified application. Based on our many years of aggregate experience in GPC, we have pre-selected the types of GPC columns that are most suitable for general GPC analysis so you don’t have to sort through redundant options.
